  18. Whenever a new Windows NT Advanced Server is installed in a routed NetBIOS
  19. domain environment, with the Advanced Server Primary Domain Controller
  20. (PDC) located on another subnet you must follow the guidelines that follow
  21. to ensure the new Domain Controller can properly validate itself onto the
  22. Advanced Server PDC.

  25. If a Windows NT Advanced Server PDC can't be located during the
  26. installation procedure, complete reinstallation is needed, because the
  27. Domain SIDs won't match

  31.  1. LMHOSTS File Creation
  32.  
  33.    Create a "ready-to-run" LMHOSTS file containing at least the "NetBIOS
  34.    name to IP Address" entry for the Windows NT Advanced Server PDC on a
  35.    disk using the above mentioned predefined values.

  37.  2. Add Computer to Domain
  38.  
  39.    Define the workstation name for this new Advanced Server DC on the
  40.    Advanced Server Primary Domain Controller by using the Control Panel
  41.    Applet Server Manager in the Add Computer To Domain dialog box.

  43.  3. Start Installation of Windows NT Advanced Server
  44.  
  45.    Run the Advanced Server installation by using the network install
  46.    procedure (WINNT.EXE) or the CD-ROM installation procedure with
  47.    inserting the boot disk in drive A, until the network adapter
  48.    configuration appears.

  50.  4. Add Adapter...
  51.  
  52.    During the initial installation of the new Advanced Server Domain
  53.    Controller, the setup program scans for an available adapter. By
  54.    default, the setup installs only the first adapter recognized. If
  55.    multiple adapters have been installed, ensure the default adapter can be
  56.    used to access the Advanced Server PDC. Otherwise, install any
  57.    additional Adapter Card driver by using the Add Adapter button at this
  58.    time.

  60.  5. Add Software...
  61.  
  62.    By default, only the NetBEUI protocol is installed; therefore, enter
  63.    "Add Software ..." and select TCP/IP Protocol as the Network Software to
  64.    install.

  66.  6. Configure...

  68.    In the Installed Network Software dialog box, select the TCP/IP Protocol
  69.    and use the Configure button to define the proper values for the IP
  70.    Address(es), Subnet Mask and Default Gateway per adapter. Be sure you
  71.    select the right adapter in the Adapter box to define those settings.
  72.    Warning, only one adapter can support NetBIOS over TCP/IP. To eliminate
  73.    any conflicts, install only the TCP/IP setting in this dialog box for
  74.    the adapter needed to connect to the Advanced Server PDC.

  76.  7. Import LMHOSTS...

  78.    Select the Import LMHOSTS option and import the "ready-to-run" LMHOSTS
  79.    file created during the first step before you choose the OK button to
  80.    continue the installation.

  82.  8. Return to Network Settings Dialog Box

  84.    When you choose the OK button, you will be returned to the Network
  85.    Setting dialog box

  87.  9. Leave Network Setting Pressing OK
  88.  
  89.    Be sure to have the above eight points checked before you choose OK in
  90.    the Network Settings dialog box, because there is no way back from this
  91.    point.

  93. 10. Define Computer Name and Domain

  95.    Define the proper Computer Name added to the domain at point 2 and
  96.    select the domain name into which this new Domain Controller will
  97.    participate.

  99. 11. Validate onto Windows NT Advanced Server Primary Domain Controller
  100.  
  101.    If you continue from this point, the Advanced Server server will try to
  102.    connect to the Advanced Server PDC to be validated, and synchronize the
  103.    domain SIDs. If this fails into an error, check all network hardware
  104.    including the routers and repeat to find the Advanced Server PDC. If at
  105.    this point the connection fails, and you continue without connecting to
  106.    the server, domain synchronization will fail and a full installation
  107.    from point 3 is needed.
